Driveaway vs. Shipping: What Service To Choose?

Driveaway vs. Shipping: What Service To Choose?

When you’ve bought a car, truck, or recreational vehicle that’s some distance away, and it’s in good running condition, you have a few options for bringing it home. You can go get it yourself, pay a transport company to trailer it to you, or you can pay a driveaway service to send a licensed, insured individual to drive it to your door.

A driveaway service can save you a good deal of time, effort, and/or money, depending upon your situation. Let’s look at a few examples.

Drive away services are convenient for getting newly purchased vehicles from one point to another.

Catching A Ride With A Buddy

Say you’ve won a Peterbilt 379 day cab on auction. (Congratulations, by the way.) It’s a few states over, so you’re considering your options. A friend offers to drive you there, but you’ll have to wait until he’s available on the weekend. Your expenses would include gas for his vehicle coming and going, fuel for the Peterbilt’s trip home, food for you both, and—because the truck doesn’t have a sleeper—one or two hotel rooms for the overnight. A reputable driveaway service can save you money in this scenario. The cost of driveaway is often a flat rate plus reimbursement for fuel. Even better, you won’t have to spend most of your weekend on the road.

Flying Out To Get It

Here’s another real-world example. You’ve just bought a Thor Motor Coach RV that’s about 800 miles away, which means that if you were to go get it, you would have lodging if you needed to spend the night. Unfortunately, you don’t have another driver, so you would have to catch a one-way flight to the nearest city. Besides airfare, you would need to pay for transportation from the airport to the RV’s location. Driveaway services are popular with owners of motorhomes for these and other reasons. In a situation like this, hiring a driver can save you time and money—and spare you the hassles of air travel.

Hiring A Hauler

Booking a carrier to haul your new SUV or piggyback your new Kenworth is an easy solution, although it’s usually pricier to hire transport like this than it costs to use a driveaway service. The latter is often much faster, too, as the driver won’t be stopping off along the route to pick up and drop off other freight.

Find The Right Driveaway Service With FR8Star

FR8Star makes it as easy to hire a driveaway service as it does to book tractor-trailer transport. It’s free to ask for quotes from bonded, insured driveaway companies with appropriately licensed, professional drivers. The bids you receive will include all costs associated with delivering your vehicle. (Note that transport companies that also provide driveaway services may also send you a second bid indicating how much they would charge to haul your vehicle by trailer.)

You’ll want to do a little research on the services submitting bids to you. Look at credible reviews online, as well as each service’s driver requirements such as a minimum age or whether they’ve had to put up collateral against failing to complete the delivery. To help you understand how long a driveaway service has worked with FR8Star and how well their customers have reviewed them, FR8Star places them in tiers labeled Bronze, Silver, Gold, Platinum, and Diamond.

Important Details

When you’ve narrowed your choices down to two or three services, ask to see their insurance certificates. Ask questions, and be sure you understand the amount and extent of their liability and property damage coverage. Once you’re satisfied, award the bid to the driveaway service of your choice. The driver and FR8Star personnel will be easy to communicate with to make sure the trip goes as smoothly as possible.

How To Measure Freight For Shipping

How To Measure Freight For Shipping

Life is a game of inches. The same goes for truck freight shipping. Having accurate shipping dimensions down to the last inch is necessary and might be more important than some shippers initially believed.

Shipping Dimension Requirements

Shipping with FR8Star is a hassle-free experience. We calculate your freight rate, itemize all third-party costs like permits and provide access to book shipping instantly with our network of carriers. But before you can get started, you’ll need to have accurate dimensions of your equipment, machinery or other large freight. Our freight rates are generated based on live market data and include the trailer type as well as any permits required if a load is oversize. The accuracy of our freight rate calculator hinges on the accuracy of your shipping dimensions.

Always Measure From The Widest/Tallest/Longest Part

It may seem like common knowledge, but we can't overstate the importance of measuring correctly. If a measurement is off on the height, for example, your load may not be eligible for certain trailer types and might require special permits that differ from state to state. Be sure to measure your equipment or machinery from the widest, tallest and longest part on each end–regardless of how tiny the part seems.

For example, the New Holland tractor below has a stack that is higher than the roof line. As long as the stack is still connected to the trailer, it becomes the highest measuring point to determine the height of the tractor. It’s best to have two people measure so one can hold either end of the measuring tape. If you don’t have another person around at the time, you can try anchoring the measuring tape end pinned between the ground and tire to measure upwards toward the top of the stack.

Say you have a load that is close to 8ft in height but don’t know for sure. You’ll want to measure the dimension accurately to determine if the load is 8’2″ or 8’7″. When a load is over 8’5″, the cheapest option won’t qualify as a flatbed load and instead will need to travel on a step-deck trailer. The step-deck trailer is better suited for larger equipment that is taller because the trailer sits lower to the ground and won’t need the same permits as the flatbed, therefore the freight rate would actually be lower. Although it’s just a few inches, the difference would drastically affect the total freight rate if the load is considered oversize, not to mention the carrier can refuse the load because the incorrect dimensions can lead to violations by the Department of Transportation and major issues crossing low bridges.

Remember, accurate dimensions mean accurate freight rates. Get yours today and book shipping with a qualified FR8Star carrier instantly!

What Are The Benefits of PTL Shipping over LTL?

What Are The Benefits of PTL Shipping over LTL?

Partial truckload shipping can be a great way to save on shipping costs. Here’s everything you need to know about partial truckloads.

What Is A Partial Truckload?

A partial truckload is smaller freight that takes up a limited amount of space on a truck trailer allowing other items to be hauled simultaneously – hence the name partial truckload. Ok, so that wasn’t rocket science to figure out, but understanding the benefits of partial loads and how they differ from LTL shipping and other freight can be a little more complex. Instead, maybe the real question to ask is, "What qualifies freight as a partial load?"

Partial Truckload vs. LTL Shipping

You may have come across the term less-than-truckload (LTL) shipping. LTL is different from a partial truckload because it typically involves pallets not equipment or machinery and is mixed with other shippers' pallets to fill the space in a trailer. LTL freight typically requires multiple stops at various distribution centers, warehouses, and other receiving locations thus, making the delivery times longer than with partials. Sometimes, partial loads are referred to as volume LTL, but it’s important to know that volume LTL is palletized and has a specific freight class where partial loads do not. These loads will usually be hauled via a dry van or reefer truck.

On the other hand, FR8Star partial truckloads are hauled via an open deck hot shot trailer. To qualify as a partial truckload with FR8Star, the freight must be less than 12 feet in length such as a small or mid-size John Deere tractor. Certain height and weight restrictions also apply as partial truckload carriers can only legally haul a specific gross weight (varies by trailer). Keep in mind, these dimensions might be different from other transportation services providing partial truckloads.

Reasons To Choose Partial Truckload Carriers

By now you understand that choosing to ship a partial load such as a small or mid-size tractor can save you money, but just how much? With FR8Star, you can save up to 50 percent off a traditional shipping rate when you choose a partial truckload. The amount of savings will depend on the size of your freight and the trailer space it will occupy (among other factors). With a partial load, you only pay for the space you use. Sharing a trailer with another shipper is the most cost-effective way to ship. You don’t have to worry about damages to your freight either. Unlike LTL options, all FR8Star partial truckload carriers meet the FMCSA requirements for insurance coverage. Best of all you don’t need to worry about facilitating anything other than pick-up and delivery times.

Partial Load Shipping Rates

Typical truckload shipping rates for a hot shot load capable of hauling equipment is around $2.50 or so per mile depending on a variety of shipping factors that you can learn more about here. However, some partial load rates will more than likely be closer to $2.00 and if your freight is less than 8ft in length, you could even get a bargain rate of around $1.30 per mile for your partial load. With everything that has contributed to the rise in shipping rates, it’s difficult to find a way to save. Consequently, traditional freight brokers (the middlemen of the shipping deal) can’t set an accurate shipping rate because the competition to book a truck has increased. On the other hand, FR8Star’s transparent partial load pricing can alleviate some of the issues and higher costs you may be encountering with other transport services by offering a cheaper, partial rate.

FR8Star Partial Truckload Shipping

As we mentioned before, FR8Star partial loads let you save money—up to 50 percent on your freight costs. This can really go a long way, especially if you frequently need to move freight, like an equipment dealer, after all, a penny saved is a penny earned right? FR8Star has a network of over 5,000 partial truckload carriers qualified, insured, and ready to haul your equipment. Get the peace of mind you’ve been looking for with our hassle-free partial load shipping. (certain restrictions such as dimensions and location apply to qualify for partial loads)
