Navistar’s NEXT eMobility Solutions Business Unit Gets New Facility Outside Detroit
The NEXT eMobility Solutions business unit that Navistar launched in October 2019 has a new home. In mid-August, the owner of the International Truck and IC Bus brands announced a new 19,000-square-foot (1,765-square-meter) facility located at 1885 Enterprise Drive in Rochester Hills, Michigan. Situated about 30 miles north of Detroit, the facility will serve as NEXT’s “technical lead location,” housing employees who will carry out design, engineering, and analysis of all electric vehicles and batteries Navistar produces.
Gary Horvat, eMobility vice president, will head up a team of 50 employees working at the facility focusing on high-voltage systems, batteries, power electronics, electric vehicle charging infrastructure, electric vehicle hardware, and software integration. “We look forward to joining this community as we create what will be the epicenter of everything that we do in electrification,” Horvat says. NEXT employees are set to transition from Navistar’s corporate headquarters in Lisle, Illinois, to the new facility in the coming months.
Navistar has previously stated it will offer NEXT-developed vehicles via its International Truck and IC Bus brands, with sales and support coming through dealers. NEXT is taking a “4 Cs” approach—consulting, charging, construction, and connecting—to develop solutions. Navistar has already displayed its International eMV Series medium-duty truck and electric school bus prototypes at U.S. trade shows.
Navistar CEO Persio Lisboa said in October, “NEXT will combine the lean and agile approach of a startup with the proven engineering and manufacturing capabilities of Navistar. The team is well-positioned to deliver rapid, customer-focused innovations in the e-mobility space.”
